WORLD BOOK & COPYRIGHT DAY 23rd APRIL
WORLD BOOK & COPYRIGHT DAY 23rd APRIL
World Book and Copyright Day is a celebration to promote the enjoyment of books and reading. Each year, on 23 April, celebrations take place all over the world to recognize the scope of books - a link between the past and the future, a bridge between generations and across cultures. On this occasion, UNESCO and the international organizations representing the three major sectors of the book industry - publishers, booksellers and libraries, select the World Book Capital for a year to maintain, through its own initiatives, the impetus of the Day’s celebrations.
23 April is a symbolic date in world literature. It is the date on which several prominent authors, William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. This date was a natural choice for UNESCO's General Conference, held in Paris in 1995, to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone to access books.

History of World Book and Copyright Day
World Book and Copyright Day, celebrated annually on April 23rd, boasts a rich history intertwined with the evolution of book culture and the fight for author rights. Let’s embark on a literary voyage through its captivating past:
Seeds of Inspiration
- 1926: The roots lie in Catalonia, Spain, where April 23rd is traditionally honored as Saint George’s Day, a celebration marked by gifting roses and books. Author Vicente Clavel sees an opportunity to promote literature and proposes a “Book Day” on this date.
- 1930: After Cervantes’ death anniversary also falls on April 23rd, the day gains further significance and takes on an international dimension.
Germination of a Global Event
- 1952: UNESCO establishes itself as a champion of cultural heritage and recognizes the crucial role of books in education and understanding.
- 1990: The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) joins the cause, emphasizing the importance of protecting the rights of authors and creators.
Blooming into the Book and Copyright Day
- 1995: UNESCO’s General Conference officially proclaims April 23rd as World Book and Copyright Day, highlighting the dual purpose of celebrating books and advocating for author rights.
- Since then: This day has blossomed into a global phenomenon, observed in over 100 countries. Libraries, bookstores, schools, and communities organize diverse activities – readings, discussions, book drives, and author events – to foster a love for books and raise awareness about copyright protection.
A Celebration with a Cause
World Book and Copyright Day not only celebrates the magic of reading and the transformative power of stories but also addresses crucial issues:
- Promoting literacy and access to books for all: The day shines a light on populations with limited access to reading materials and encourages initiatives to bridge the gap.
- Highlighting the value of intellectual property: It emphasizes the importance of copyright protection in ensuring fair compensation for authors and encouraging the creation of new books.
- Celebrating diversity in literature: The day promotes the inclusion of different voices and perspectives, enriching the literary landscape and fostering cultural understanding.

Earth Day 22nd April
Earth Day 22nd April
How did Earth Day first originate?
Earth Day originated in the US a few months after a massive oil spill off the California coast. US Senator Gaylord Nelson had sought to “infuse the energy of student anti-war protests with an emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution" during this time. He recruited activist Denis Hayes to organize campus teach-ins and scale the idea to a broader public. The duo chose April 22 as the date — then a weekday falling between Spring Break and Final Exams — to maximize student participation.
What is the theme?
“Planet vs. Plastics unites students, parents, businesses, governments, churches, unions, individuals, and NGOs in an unwavering commitment to call for the end of plastics for the sake of human and planetary health, demanding a 60% reduction in the production of plastics by 2040 and an ultimate goal of building a plastic-free future for generations to come," reads an excerpt from the official Earth Day website.

National Youth Day 2024
National Youth Day 2024
National Youth Day is observed on 12th January every year since 1985. The day also marks the birth anniversary of the Swami Vivekananda.National Youth Day is celebrated every year to honor the ideals and thoughts of Swami Vivekananda. Swami Vivekananda was very vocal about the importance of youth in the process of nation-building.
Born on 12th January 1863 in Kolkata, the spiritual thinker was unlike any other monk. What Swami Vivekananda achieved overseas played a major role in reviving India's image as a land of spirituality.
The speech he delivered at the at the Parliament of World's Religions in Chicago in 1893 which began with "Sisters and brothers of America" immortalized the ideals the monk believed in globally.
Swami Vivekananda always focused immensely on harnessing the potential of the youth. He wanted to inspire the young generation so that they could counter the British and attain Independence.
Swami Vivekananda's weapons of winning the world were education and peace. He always portrayed himself as a 'Nationalist Saint' who wanted the youth to get out of their comfort zones and achieve absolutely anything they desire.
Swami Vivekananda had incredible understanding and knowledge of philosophy, religion, literature, Vedas, Puranas, Upanishads, and what not.
In all the classes he took overseas, all the speeches he made, every word uttered by him was backed up intensive research and thorough knowledge of the concerned subject.
Swami Vivekananda's aspiration was to motivate the youth to an extent that they start voicing the changes they desire and ultimately accomplish them. In order to honor his vision and motivate youth to act on it, National Youth Day is celebrated across the country.
Famous quotes of Swami Vivekananda:
1. "A brave, frank, clean-hearted, courageous and aspiring youth is the only foundation on which the future nation can be built."
2. "We are what our thoughts have made us; so take care about what you think. Words are secondary. Thoughts live; they travel far."
3. "Great work requires great and persistent effort for a long time. Character has to be established through a thousand stumbles."
4. Your aim is yours, so don’t change it for others."
5. "Arise, awake and stop not until the goal is reached."
6. "If the mind is intensely eager, everything can be accomplished-mountains can be crumbled into atom.”
7. “Condemn none: if you can stretch out a helping hand, do so. If you cannot, fold your hands, bless your brothers, and let them go their own way.”
8. “A few heart- whole, sincere, and energetic men and women can do more in a year than a mob in a century.”
9. "Face the brutes.’ That is a lesson for all life-face the terrible, face it boldly. Like the monkeys, the hardships of life fall back when we cease to flee before them.”
10. "In a day, when you don’t come across any problems – you can be sure that you are travelling in a wrong path.”
